Prehistoric Burial Mounds and Earthworks in Ashtabula County, Ohio




ASHTABULA COUNTY, ARCHAEOLOGY
Ashtabula, the extreme northeastern county of the state, was 
traversed by the old original trail which skirted the southern 
shore of Lake Erie. Throughout the northern part of the county, 
are found evidences of the great importance of this trail as a 
passageway from east to west, south of the great lakes. Man}' im- 
plements of stone and other materials have been picked up along 
the course of this old highway and numerous burials have been 
noted. 

The principal earthworks are in Conneaut, Wayne and Wind- 
sor townships. Several mounds are located along the Ashtabula 
and Grand rivers and their tributaries. An aboriginal cemetery 
of considerable importance existed on the Present site of  Conneaut
